Aging and Mental Health as a Factor in National Elections
A CME Session Sponsored by the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation
Sunday, March 16, 4:30 PM–6:00 PM
MODERATOR: Martha Bruce, MPH, PhD, GMHF Chair
SPEAKER: George Stanley McGovern, PhD, Former U.S. Senator, South
Dakota
The Foundation is sponsoring a symposium on how the factors of
mental health and aging impact and influence political elections.
Special guest speaker Senator George McGovern will speak from personal
experience and recount the nation’s response when it was discovered
his first choice for a vice-presidential running mate in 1972 had
been treated for depression. He will discuss whether the situation
would be similar in today’s society, more than 30 years later,
as well as how the issues of mental illness and aging will be part
of the political agendas in 2008/9.
Senator McGovern has been an outspoken advocate for fair and equal
access to treatment for mental disorders from his experience as
a father whose daughter died from alcohol addiction. As a policy
maker, he brings years of experience including serving as both a
U.S. Representative and Senator from South Dakota. He was the Democratic
nominee for President in 1972, and was appointed U.S. ambassador
to the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Agencies and UN
Global Ambassador on World Hunger by the World Food Programme. In
2007, a celebration of McGovern’s 85 years was held on Capitol
Hill in Washington, D.C. He has lectured at more than
1,000 colleges and universities around the world, and is the author
of several books including The Essential America and, with William
R. Polk, Out of Iraq: A Practice Plan for Withdrawal Now. Senator
McGovern will give prepared remarks and then open up the session
for discussion.
